Project 1: Brain Development from Conception to 3 Years Old

The skills that this project incorporates are:

HLDG01.02.06 - Organize, write, and compile technical information and summaries.

HLDG01.02.07 - Use medical terminology in order to interpret, transcribe, and communicate information, data, and observations.

In this project I will demonstrate the brain development of a child from the time of conception to three years of age.

Trimester 1

  • Neural Tube Formation

    • About two weeks after conception, the neural plate begins to fold onto itself.

    • This process is complete by 4 weeks, and the neural tube will eventually form into the brain and spinal cord.

  • Neuron and Synapse Development

    • Around week 7 after conception, the first neurons and synapses begin to develop in the spinal cord.

    • These early neuron connections make fetal movement possible, which in turn, give the brain sensory input.
